Familiarisation

Groups coming to the Lake District are recommended to arrive at least 48 and a minimum of 24 hours
before the expedition starts.  This allows time for familiarisation and acclimatisation and, for those
under assessment by the Panel, time for the pre-expedition check.  Groups are more likely to have
an assessor volunteer to assess them if they allow plenty of time for the pre-expedition check.
It is difficult for both the group and the assessor if the group arrive late the day before the expedition.

For groups under assessment practical assessment in the form of a pre-expedition check takes place before the expedition can start.  Gold groups requesting assessment will receive a Cumbria Panel pre-expedition check form which should be completed if a local pre-expedition check is to take place.  This form can then be either sent to the assessor or give to her/him at the Lake District pre-expedition check.  When the assessor is satisfied with the pre-expedition check, the journey can begin.  Time-keeping is important throughout the expedition.

The pre-expedition check will include:
  • checking the participants' Record Books to ensure that all training and practice journeys have been completed and signed up
  • going through the route with the group
  • checking the equipment, in particular waterproofs, walking boots, tents, hats, gloves, maps, compassess, rucksacks, sleeping bags, food, stoves and the weight of the rucksacks complete with all equipment
  • checking who will receive the report of the journey
